EIGHT DAYS A WEEK
DOMESTIC SERVICE IN VICTORIAN AMERICA
JANUARY 27 - JUNE 11, 2006
SERVANTS WANTED FOR GRAND AVENUE MANSION
DUTIES INCLUDE: Opening and closing of house daily, dusting,
cooking, sweeping, laundry, caring for children, maintenance and
driving of horse and carriage, clearing of table after all meals,
washing the dishes, polishing of all silver, and any other special
tasks that might arise. Wages determined by position sought after,
references, character, and appearance. Hours are 6:30AM to 11:00PM
daily, with 1/2 day off every other Sunday.Sound appealing? ...
probably not. In our day and age of minimum wage, the 8- hour
workday, and child labor laws, this type of advertisement would
seem absurd. However, during the height of Victorian Era Servant
Employment, 1870-1915, there was a large demand for good help,
and men and women sought to work in the homes of the wealthy hoping
for a good employer and a decent wage.
The subject has been documented in books and movies but it is
a first at the Pabst Mansion. EIGHT DAYS A WEEK , running January
27-June 11, 2006, chronicles the lives of the countless unknown
people who worked and lived in places like the Pabst Mansion and,
through hard work and long hours, made them come to life. Learn
the daily schedule of a parlor maid, what it meant to "mangle"
linens, know the literal way one would light a house, and the
best way to beat a carpet plus much more!
The Pabst Mansion is open Monday-Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm and
Sunday noon-4:00pm (Closed Monday mid-January through February).
The Pabst Mansion's admissions are Adults $8, Seniors/Students
$7, Children 6-17 $4, Children under 6 are admitted free. If you
