CUTTING LOOSE
SPORTS AND LEISURE IN THE VICTORIAN ERA
JUNE 17-OCTOBER 30, 2005

The Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion, 2000 West Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, WI-
Fun times in the Victorian Era?! Contrary to popular thought, men and women of this era, known for its strict moral codes and etiquette, did allow for some fun leisure time. Cutting Loose explores some of the more traditional forms of relaxation such as reading, needlework, and music. As well as the new forms of recreation that appeared during this time with topics including parlor games, the fitness craze, the role of organized sports, the rise of the sportswoman, and America on wheels.

Cutting Loose showcases antique sports artifacts and vintage photographs of Victorian recreation from area collectors as well as the Pabst Archives. Highlights include High-Wheel Bicycles, a crochet hook made of whale bone, an 1880 homemade doll quilt, all wool swimsuits c.1920, a baseball uniform c.1915, and complete cricket, croquet, and polo sporting sets, plus much more. Join us this summer at the Pabst Mansion, and see if your idea of fun is on the same level as those crazy Victorians!

The Pabst Mansion is open Monday-Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday noon-4:00pm (Closed Monday mid-January through February). The Pabst Mansion's admissions are Adults $8, Seniors/Students $7, Children 6-17 $4, Children under 6 are admitted free.
