A PASSION FOR THE EXOTIC
Victorians Obsession with the East
January 25, 2008 - June 8, 2008
Made In China takes an entirely different twist in the Pabst Mansion’s newest exhibit PASSION FOR THE EXOTIC: Victorians Obsession With the East, on display January 25, 2008 through June 8, 2008. Traveling to and collecting items from the East- China, Japan, Southeast Asia, the Holy Land, and the Mediterranean Region- became a new past time for wealthy citizens in the 19th century, including the Pabst, Schandein, Nunnemacher, Steinmeyer, and Blatz families here in Milwaukee. During the 1890s especially, as Western industry and commerce pushed to Asia for the first time, American representatives followed, encountering new modes of architecture, fresh examples of dress and art, foreign cooking ingredients, exotic animals and wildlife, and above all else styles of décor completely opposite the very heavy Victorian designs back home. These Victorians became souvenir hunters extraordinaire, spending sums of money on individual items equivalent to some servants’ annual salaries!
Eastern treasures showcased at the Pabst Mansion include a four-foot tall Japanese vase, a kimono and water pipe belonging to Rudolph and Emma Pabst Nunnemacher, Japanese shoes and hair accessories from the 1890s, Roman lamps, a vast array of books, and much more. Like all good travelers, Gilded Age Globetrotters also sent home correspondence and took plenty of pictures of the scenery and themselves. Exhibit highlights include a postcard from Captain Pabst sent from Jerusalem and a photograph of Maria Pabst dressed in Egyptian clothing. Not to be stopped by the mere importation of Eastern objects, Victorians obsession with all things Eastern manifested in the devotion of entire rooms in their grand mansions for new Asian parlors, support for the immigration and employment of Asian servants, and the foundation of Chinese restaurants. All things well documented then and having many lasting influences in our culture today!
